The phrase necessitates a knowledge about an apposition, or appositive, which means the same between two immediate words or phrases. In other words, it holds the semantic equation between "the alarming prospect" and "an independent Templar state." (the alarming prospect=an independent Templar state)


3)"The preposition of-led appositive phrase" can naturally be replaced by "that appositive clause."
